Queensland tour operators face a critical dilemma as they seek to protect their industry from the proposed e-bike law. A government bill targeting under-16s using electric-powered devices aims to impose strict regulations on mobility equipment, which could cripple small businesses reliant on personal mobility devices (PMDs). Tour guides warn that such restrictions will devastate their income, particularly for those who use Segway or other recreational gear. Zak Kelly, a local guide, expresses frustration, stating that many international tourists arrive unprepared and cannot access services like boat tours. However, the proposed legislation includes a 10 km/h speed limit on footpaths, which would further challenge the feasibility of shorter, more family-friendly trips. The state’s Tourism Industry Council estimates up to 8% of the region’s tourism industry could suffer due to these changes. While the government plans to consider its response, critics argue that the debate over PMD usage has already shifted the focus away from traditional travel options. Travelers may find themselves losing their ability to engage in activities they once enjoyed, raising questions about the future of sustainable mobility.
